In an era dominated by the musical gyrations of the very famous ra’asa (belly dancer), dancers such as Dina and many lesser known clones, look towards the past for inspiration in a now very conservative and Islamic Cairo. However, few dancers understand how history, politics, and social change in the Arab World have shaped el ra’s el shar’I (belly dance). Dance does not exist in a vacuum but changes with the culture and the people it manifests.
