I came up to this article while I was googling randomly. As a Turk who now lives in US, I am so upset that Ms. Arar makes so many wrong conclusions about Turkey.
First, it is not only untrue but also ridiculous to claim that Ataturk has anyting to with being a "Jew". I think it is time for the people of Middle East to act like true adults and stop producing lies / conspiracy theories. Ataturk's father was an Ottoman officer (a Turk) and mother, also a Turk, was a very devout Muslim, who wanted his son to become an Islam cleric. As a young boy Ataturk refused to follow his mother's desires and wanted to become a soldier.
Second, many things that you mention in the drama are not normal also for Turkey (ex marital sex, abortion etc). A drama is a drama, not the reflection of n avergae Turkish family life. The difference between Turkey and Syria is that in Turkey producers are free to make dramas/movies not bound by Islamic values.
Many changes Ataturk made in Turkey are highly respected in Turkish society. Arabic letters are, well, ARABIC letters, and I don't see why we should use them while the rest of the World uses the much easier to write Latin letters.
Also, I am sorry to say that Arabs have a very bad reputation in Turkey. During the 1st WW, the Ottoman chalif (you blame Ataturk for abolishing it) declared jihad against Western imperialists but Arabs preferred to ally with Christian British and butcher Muslim Turks. Recently, your country, Syria, supported PKK terrorism against Turkey for 20 years, which cost the lives of more than 30 000 Turkish citizens.
Past is past. I am for good ties between our Arab neighbors and Turkey. But do not accuse us for not similar to Arabs. If we are now a more developed country it is because we are now more Turk and less Arab. |

| Plese! Serious people even in the West do not take these meat markets/beauty contests seriously. There are enough beautiful and smart women in the MidEast to not have to resort to this nonsense. Take a look at those Jordanian airplane pilots. My country in Eastern Europe dropped out long ago. |

Hi Lenore,
Right for education as a weapon
Thank you for your inquiry. For those children in elementary and middle schools who struggle and survive the everyday sniper post-discussed in school everyday- to be avoided, those who make it to school may not make it through high school due to closures and curfews.
I found it surprisingly right as I was reading Schooling around the world. I remember as a Palestinian refugee that my parents and used to tell me that we lost everything, land, identity and our rights, but no one would take our right of education from us. Education is our way out of this mess; it is our weapon to end the only occupation in the 20th century. As for your inquiry regarding the higher % of educated women in Palestine in proportion to men at the same age, it is due to different reasons among which:
1- Administrative arrests- 6 months- renewed as necessary.
2- Unemployment factor and men helping their families.
3- Closures of boys’ schools more than girls’ schools, since boys and girls schools separate staring the 5th grade if not earlier. Home schooling was an alternative method for parents and teachers as well participate in educating a group of students in a mutual place other than the closed school.
I have found this website; please browse it and you maybe able to see a distinction between actions against the two genders.

Hi Maher,
My ethnography compares the women of Palestine with the women on Jamaica. From what I've read the women of Palestine are hire educated that the women in other parts of the Middle East. Have you found the same in your research?
